Send SMS/voice alerts from Asix SCADA

Asix SCADA alarms reach the person on duty as an SMS or a phone call. SMSEagle sends them over its own cellular connection, so they don’t depend on internet access or a cloud service.

No extra software to install

Asix SCADA already has a way to send outbound notifications – point it at SMSEagle instead of a cloud SMS provider, and the alert becomes an SMS or a call, no separate gateway service or custom code required.

Alarms go to the right team

Notification groups defined in Asix SCADA map directly to matching contact groups in SMSEagle, so alarms reach the exact team responsible – without rebuilding your recipient logic.

Works with redundant SCADA servers

Asix SCADA’s Alerter can be scoped to the active controller only, so on a redundant setup, notifications always come from whichever server is currently in charge.

How it works

1

Enable Email to SMS

Turn on Email to SMS in the SMSEagle web interface and create a forwarding rule for incoming alarm emails.

2

Configure email settings in Asix SCADA

Under Alerter > Email Settings, set the SMTP server, port, and authentication (SMSEagle can act as this SMTP server).

3

Alarms arrive as SMS and voice calls

SMSEagle delivers the alert over its own cellular connection, not through a third-party service, as an SMS, MMS, or voice call, to the right person’s phone.

Set up in about 10 minutes

Setting up SMSEagle with Asix SCADA takes just a few minutes – enable Email to SMS, configure one Alerter email setting, mirror your notification groups in SMSEagle, and alarms start arriving as SMS and voice calls immediately.

SMSEagle sends Asix SCADA alerts to the right person by SMS, phone call or WhatsApp, day and night.

SMS, voice calls, WhatsApp and email from one device

SMSEagle delivers Asix SCADA alerts by SMS, voice call, WhatsApp or email from a single device, so urgent alerts reach people where they actually look.

If the first person doesn't respond, the alert is sent to the next

Escalation groups and shift schedules make sure the Asix SCADA alert reaches the person on duty, and the next person on the list if nobody responds.

Alerts keep working even if one device fails

Two SMSEagle devices can work as an HA cluster: if one fails, the other takes over sending.

SMSEagle configuration

This integration will use Email To SMS plugin (see details: Email To SMS plugin). This plugin is included in each version of SMSEagle device.

    • Enable Email To SMS plugin in the web interface: Settings > Channels > Email > Email to SMS.
    • Create a forwarding rule in Automation > Email > Email to SMS. You can forward all emails to SMS or emails from specific domains.

Asix SCADA configuration

To configure email settings, choose Alerter -> Email Settings:

  1. Server
SMTP server is used to send email notifications to users. Enter the address of the SMTP server you want to use. Note that the SMTP server must be able to accept all email addresses to be used. This is the primary SMTP server that will normally be used (you can use SMSEagle as the SMTP server).
  2. Port
Enter the SMTP server port (if you are using SMSEagle as an SMTP server, use port 25).
  3. Authentication
Check if the SMTP server requires authentication, enter the username and password in these fields.
(If you are using SMSEagle as your SMTP server, do not check authentication).

Then in Alerter -> Global Settings, define the position of the Alerter server (the position from which notifications are to be sent)

The next step is to indicate the configuration of the Alerter in the alarm domain (this is the place where alarm definitions are stored in the SCADA system), in our case we only set the Position to <Active Controller> because – for example – we have redundant servers and only the active server is to send out notifications.

The final step is to configure the recipient groups in the Security tab.
The email address consists of the notification group name@address_IP_gateway SMSEagle, such as: Automation@192.168.0.101

All done! This is all the configuration on the SCADA system side, after these steps you can assign recipients to alarms:

In the SMSEagle gateway, it remains to create groups with the same names and assign contacts to these groups:

SMSEagle as SMTP server (optional)

You can use the SMTP server installed on the SMSEagle device to send emails. Then the SMTP server configuration is as follows:

  • SMTP host: the IP address of the device
  • SMTP port: 25
  • Authentication: the SMSEagle SMTP server does not require authentication.
  • Encryption: none

Note: The SMTP server on the SMSEagle device will only accept messages addressed to it. Other messages will be rejected.

Then in Alerter -> Global Settings, define the position of the Alerter server (the position from which notifications are to be sent)

Wake-up Calls & Text-to-speech Calls (optional)

SMSEagle has a voice feature that offers wake-up calls for urgent ring-only alerts or text-to-speech calls to convert text alerts into voice calls. Complete the following steps if you want to add a follow-up voice call:

  • in the SMSEagle web interface: Automation > Email > Email to SMS edit the forwarding rule you created earlier
  • in the parameter “Call after sending SMS” choose a desired value:
    • Ring only: SMS will be followed with a wake-up (ring only) call
    • Yes – text to speech: SMS will be followed with a simple text-to-speech voice call (English language only)
    • Yes – text to speech (advanced): SMS will be followed with a text-to-speech voice call (better quality & multiple language support)
