Send SMS/voice alerts from Schneider EcoStruxure

Schneider EcoStruxure alerts reach the person on duty as an SMS or a phone call. SMSEagle sends them over its own cellular connection, so they don’t depend on internet access or a cloud service.

Uses EcoStruxure email notifications

EcoStruxure sends its usual alarm email to PHONE_NUMBER@SMSEagle_address, and SMSEagle turns it into an SMS.

No mail server needed

SMSEagle can receive emails from EcoStruxure itself, so alerts don’t depend on your company mail server.

Works without internet

SMSEagle sends alerts through its own SIM card straight to the mobile network, so they don’t depend on internet access or a cloud SMS provider.

How it works

1

Enable Email to SMS

Turn on the Email To SMS plugin in the SMSEagle web interface and create a forwarding rule for incoming alarm emails.

2

Create an Alarm Triggered Notification in EcoStruxure

In the System Tree, create a Notification folder and a new Alarm Triggered Notification with an Email2SMS distribution method pointing to SMSEagle’s address.

3

Alarms arrive as SMS and voice calls

SMSEagle delivers the alert over its own cellular connection, not through a third-party service, as an SMS or a phone call to the recipient’s phone.

Set up in about 10 minutes

Setting up SMSEagle with EcoStruxure takes 10-15 minutes – enable the Email To SMS plugin, create one Alarm Triggered Notification in EcoStruxure, and alarms start arriving as SMS and voice calls immediately.

SMSEagle sends EcoStruxure alerts to the right person by SMS or phone call, day and night.

An SMS followed by a phone call

After the SMS with an EcoStruxure alert, SMSEagle can also call: a ring-only call or a call that reads the alert aloud. You set it once in the Email to SMS rule.

Fill-in-the-call-40

If the first person doesn't respond, the alert is sent to the next

Escalation groups and shift schedules make sure the EcoStruxure alert reaches the person on duty, and the next person on the list if nobody responds.

Alerts keep working even if one device fails

Two SMSEagle devices can work as an HA cluster: if one fails, the other takes over sending.

SMSEagle configuration

  1. This integration will use Email To SMS plugin (see details: Email To SMS plugin). This plugin is included in each version of SMSEagle device.

    • Enable Email To SMS plugin in the web interface: Settings > Channels > Email > Email to SMS.
    • Create a forwarding rule in Automation > Email > Email to SMS. You can forward all emails to SMS or emails from specific domains.

EcoStruxure configuration

  1. Login to EcoStruxure Workstation
  2. Make sure you have a SMTP server alredy configured under “System Tree” > “Server” > “Properties” >”Email“.
If you don’t have SMTP server configured, you may use SMSEagle as SMTP server (see notes below). In such case use the following configuration:
    a. In “General Email Settings” > “Sender email” set value: noreply@localhost
    b. In “Primary Email Server Settings” > “Primary host” set value: IP address of your SMSEagle device
    c. In “Primary Email Server Settings” > “Primary encryption method” set value: None (alternatively you can choose TLS for better encryption)
    c. In “Primary Email Server Settings” > “Primary port” set value: 25

  3. In “System Tree” create a folder “Notification”
  4. Create new Email notification:

a. In the folder use the context menu to choose “New” > “Notification” > “Alarm Triggered Notification“.  Enter a name, for example “SMS Alarms” and click “Next“.
b. Scroll down to the bottom of the window to section “Distribution method“. Add new method with “+” button. In the window enter a name for the Distribution method (for example “Email2SMS”) and click “Next“. Configure “To email address” in the following form:

PHONE_NUMBER@IP_ADDRESS_OF_SMSEAGLE
Where:
PHONE_NUMBER is a destination phone number
IP_ADDRESS_OF_SMSEAGLE is the IP address of your device
For example: 123456789@192.168.0.101

Or
NAME_IN_PHONEBOOK@IP_ADDRESS_OF_SMSEAGLE
Where:
NAME_IN_PHONEBOOK is a username or group name (must be a public group) from SMSEagle’s phonebook
IP_ADDRESS_OF_SMSEAGLE is the IP address of your device.
For example: db-admins@192.168.0.101

Click “Create” to create and save the distribution method.

c. In the section “Filter settings” > “Notify transition to” > check “Alarm state” checkbox . Add any other Filters if needed. If no Filters or conditions are added, all alarms will be sent as SMS.
d. Click “Create” button to create and save the Notification object.

5. Test the integration by triggering an alarm in EcoStruxure.

SMSEagle as SMTP Server (optional)

As described in point 2 above, for sending e-mail messages you can use SMTP server installed on the SMSEagle device. In this scenario your email from Schneider EcoStruxure will be directly sent to SMSEagle (without using any external email servers). SMTP server on the SMSEagle device will accept messages addressed for it only. The other messages will be rejected.

Wake-up Calls & Text-to-speech Calls (optional)

SMSEagle has a voice feature that offers wake-up calls for urgent ring-only alerts or text-to-speech calls to convert text alerts into voice calls. Complete the following steps if you want to add a follow-up voice call:

  • in the SMSEagle web interface: Automation > Email > Email to SMS edit the forwarding rule you created earlier
  • in the parameter “Call after sending SMS” choose a desired value:
    • Ring only: SMS will be followed with a wake-up (ring only) call
    • Yes – text to speech: SMS will be followed with a simple text-to-speech voice call (English language only)
    • Yes – text to speech (advanced): SMS will be followed with a text-to-speech voice call (better quality & multiple language support)
