Send SMS/voice alerts from AKiPS

A device going down. A threshold breach. An interface failure. Any of these can happen at 3 a.m., and someone needs to know. SMSEagle connects to AKiPS and turns these events into an SMS or a voice call, delivered from your own hardware: no internet required, no third party involved.

Nothing to install

AKiPS sends a regular alert email to PHONE_NUMBER@SMSEagle_address, and SMSEagle turns it into an SMS.

No mail server needed

SMSEagle can receive emails from AKiPS itself, so alerts don’t depend on your company mail server.

SMS only about selected events

You set a filter in AKiPS, and an SMS is sent only when an event matches it.

AKiPS sends an email to a special address in the format PHONE_NUMBER@IP.ADDRESS.OF.SMSEAGLE, using its built-in email alerting.

Alert

SMSEagle delivers the alert over its own cellular connection, not through a third-party service, as an SMS, MMS, or voice call, to the recipient’s phone.

After the SMS with an AKiPS alert, SMSEagle can also call: a ring-only wake-up call or a call that reads the alert aloud. You set it once in the Email to SMS rule.

Escalation groups and shift schedules make sure the AKiPS alert reaches the person on duty, and the next person on the list if nobody responds.

Several actions from one alert

An AKiPS alert can be passed on by email, WhatsApp or Signal, or start a phone call, using SMSEagle Workflow Automation.

SMSEagle configuration

This integration will use the Email to SMS plugin (see details: Email to SMS plugin). This plugin is included in each version of SMSEagle device.

  • Enable Email to SMS in the web interface: Settings > Channels > Email > Email to SMS. Configure message handling (what to do with the email subject, character limit, MMS conversion) before creating rules.
  • Create a forwarding rule in Automation > Email > Email to SMS, specifying which modem sends the message and any filtering conditions (sender, subject, content).
  • Once configured, emails sent to PHONE_NUMBER@YOUR_GATEWAY (or CONTACT_NAME@YOUR_GATEWAY for a Phonebook contact/group) are automatically converted to SMS.

AKiPS configuration

Configure the email server:
  1. Go to Admin > System > System Settings. Scroll to the Email Server section
  2. To change the default email address, enter it in the From Address text field.
  3. In the SMTP Server text field, type the hostname or IP address of your SMTP server.
    E.g. smtp.mydomain.com
  4. Complete the Username and Password text fields if required
  5. To test, type your email address in the Test Email text field and click Send.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Go to Admin > System > System Shutdown. Click Reboot Server to apply.
  8. Optional – you can use SMSEagle as SMTP server
Configure email alerts:
  1. Go to Admin > Alerting > Status Alerts. Specify a filter, add an email action.
  2. In the email to field type: PHONE_NUMBER@IP.ADDRESS.OF.SMSEAGLE
    (for example: 123456789@192.168.1.101), which is the exact format required by Email2SMS feature.
  3. Click Save

Wake-up Calls & Text-to-speech Calls (optional)

SMSEagle has a voice feature that offers wake-up calls for urgent ring-only alerts or text-to-speech calls to convert text alerts into voice calls. Complete the following steps if you want to add a follow-up voice call:

  • in the SMSEagle web interface: Automation > Email > Email to SMS edit the forwarding rule you created earlier
  • in the parameter “Call after sending SMS” choose a desired value:
    • Ring only: SMS will be followed with a wake-up (ring only) call
    • Yes – text to speech: SMS will be followed with a simple text-to-speech voice call (English language only)
    • Yes – text to speech (advanced): SMS will be followed with a text-to-speech voice call (better quality & multiple language support)
