Transforming Healthcare Alerts with a Scalable, Internet-Independent SMS Platform

Use Case

MEDAX Systems needed a communication solution that could send critical notifications without relying on internet connectivity, as many health-care scenarios demand guaranteed delivery.

They switched from an open-source PBX (Asterisk) to the SMSEagle hardware SMS gateway, enabling high-volume, reliable SMS alerts directly to carriers and achieving thousands of messages monthly with full confidence.

“What we needed was the ability to communicate directly with our clients at any time without having to rely on an internet connection.”

Challenge

  • In healthcare, timeliness and reliability are vital: MEDAX’s clients required immediate notifications for software issues, updates and device-alerts.

  • Their previous system (Asterisk-based) was open-source, community-support reliant, and lacked scalability and assured delivery for high-volume SMS.

  • Internet-based delivery methods and cloud dependencies introduced risk: if connectivity failed or servers were down, critical messages could be delayed or lost.

  • They needed a high-throughput, scalable system capable of sending tens of thousands of SMS per month, integrated with CRM and healthcare workflows.

Solution & Deployment

  • MEDAX Systems deployed the SMSEagle hardware SMS gateway, which supports global GSM/3G/4G bands and sends SMS messages directly via mobile carriers, bypassing the internet.

  • The gateway was integrated into their CRM and alerting infrastructure with the help of local partner IT AWACS, who configured features like automatic archiving of SMS and high-modem throughput.

  • The solution enabled maintenance-free, high-volume SMS transmission—for example, an eight-modem device version sending up to ~240 SMS per minute.

  • Full integration included SMS conversion of alerts, medicine reminders, device fault notifications and software updates—all delivered reliably to medical practitioners even in low-internet-connectivity scenarios.

Results & Benefits

  • MEDAX Systems now runs tens of thousands of SMS messages monthly without issues.

  • The organization achieved high throughput and scalability for critical notifications in healthcare workflows.

  • The switch to hardware SMS gateway removed dependency on internet connectivity and third-party services, thereby improving reliability and control of the communication channel.

  • Customer confidence increased thanks to predictable and efficient delivery of alerts, updates and communications in a sector where delays can have serious consequences.

  • The integration simplified workflows and allowed further expansion of SMS-based communication across devices, services and client organizations.
