Send SMS/voice alerts from Oracle Enterprise Manager

Oracle Enterprise Manager alerts reach the person on duty as an SMS or a phone call. SMSEagle sends them over its own cellular connection, so they don’t depend on internet access or a cloud service.

Uses Enterprise Manager email notifications

You enter PHONE_NUMBER@SMSEagle_address as the Pager address in Enterprise Manager, and SMSEagle turns each notification into an SMS.

Short messages that fit in an SMS

The Pager format in Enterprise Manager sends a shorter message than a regular email, so the SMS contains only what matters.

Works without internet

SMSEagle sends alerts through its own SIM card straight to the mobile network, so they don’t depend on internet access or a cloud SMS provider.

How it works

1

Incident Rule fires

An Incident Rule Set in Enterprise Manager matches an alert, and its Basic Notifications action pages the assigned EM Administrator.

2

Pager email to SMSEagle

Enterprise Manager sends that page as an email to the administrator’s configured SMS/Pager address, formatted as mobile_number@SMSEagle_IP.

3

SMS & voice alert

SMSEagle delivers the alert over its own cellular connection, not through a third-party service, as an SMS or a phone call to the recipient’s phone.

Set up in about 10 minutes

No custom scripting or Oracle plugin required. Enterprise Manager already supports paging by email – point it at SMSEagle’s Email-to-SMS plugin and incident alerts are texting your on-call administrators in about 10-15 minutes.

SMSEagle sends Enterprise Manager alerts to the right person by SMS or phone call, day and night.

An SMS followed by a phone call

After the SMS with an Enterprise Manager alert, SMSEagle can also call: a ring-only call or a call that reads the alert aloud. You set it once in the Email to SMS rule.

Fill-in-the-call-53

If the first person doesn't respond, the alert is sent to the next

Escalation groups and shift schedules make sure the Enterprise Manager alert reaches the person on duty, and the next person on the list if nobody responds.

Alerts keep working even if one device fails

Two SMSEagle devices can work as an HA cluster: if one fails, the other takes over sending.

SMSEagle configuration

This integration will use Email To SMS plugin (see details: Email To SMS plugin). This plugin is included in each version of SMSEagle device.

  • Enable Email To SMS plugin in the web interface: Settings > Channels > Email > Email to SMS.
  • Create a forwarding rule in Automation > Email > Email to SMS. You can forward all emails to SMS or emails from specific domains.

Oracle Enterprise Manager configuration

Oracle CC 12c Setup

1. First, be sure that your Mail Server is setup in Setup / Notifications / Notification Methods and you can receive the test e-mail.
You can use either your own email server, or use SMSEagle as SMTP server – just make sure that both servers can access each other.

2. Next, create an EM administrator user, then login as that user to update your e-mail address and SMS/Pager information by clicking on the Username drop down menu and selecting Enterprise Manager Password & Email.

3. For the SMS/Pager, you need the text based address.  Provide email address in format mobile_number@SMSEagle_IP

Select the Email Type Pager for SMS messages as they are shorter than the Email format.   It’s important to note, that you will not see the multiple lines in the Setup / Security / Administrators view.  You can enter multiple e-mails separated by commas, but the E-mail Type option will not be available.

By default, both email and pager will be enabled in your Notification Schedule, you may adjust this as necessary by going to Setup / Notifications / My Notification Schedule.   You can receive notifications by both e-mail/page, just e-mail, or just page depending on what you configure here.

5. Next, you need to create an Incident Rule Set, or edit an existing one.   From Setup / Incidents / Incident Rules, select a rule set and rule to edit.  Once you get to the Action for the Rule, in the Basic Notifications section, select the EM Administrator in the Page box.  Save all changes.

6. You can test the Incident Rule Set by selecting your Rule Set and clicking the Simulate Rules button (Setup / Incidents /  Incident Rules).  You will need to select a Target, Event Type and find an alert to simulate.  Then you will get a list of Actions that the Incident Rule Set will perform for this alert.

Wake-up Calls & Text-to-speech Calls (optional)

SMSEagle has a voice feature that offers wake-up calls for urgent ring-only alerts or text-to-speech calls to convert text alerts into voice calls. Complete the following steps if you want to add a follow-up voice call:

  • in the SMSEagle web interface: Automation > Email > Email to SMS edit the forwarding rule you created earlier
  • in the parameter “Call after sending SMS” choose a desired value:
    • Ring only: SMS will be followed with a wake-up (ring only) call
    • Yes – text to speech: SMS will be followed with a simple text-to-speech voice call (English language only)
    • Yes – text to speech (advanced): SMS will be followed with a text-to-speech voice call (better quality & multiple language support)
